Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like a walking vacuum cleaner whenever the haze comes around? đ
Every time I step outside, I imagine myself sucking up all the dust and tiny particles in the air⌠straight into my lungs. Aiyoyo!
Not exactly the kind of thing I want my body to collect!
Living in Malaysia, we're no strangers to hazy days. But when air quality gets worse, staying healthy isn't just about eating well or exercising more. Sometimes, it's about making a few smarter choices.
1. Your Kitchen Might Be Making the Haze Worse (Indoors!)

Surprise! Outdoor haze isn't the only source of fine particles we should pay attention to.
Cooking, especially frying and other high-temperature methods, can produce fine particles indoors. When outdoor air quality is poor, we don't want to add more pollution inside our homes.
My little haze-day kitchen hack: try steaming, boiling or preparing simple no-cook meals instead of frying. Think overnight oats with fruit, a colourful salad or a simple steamed meal.
Less cooking smoke, less cleaning and less time in the kitchen. Triple win! Use effective kitchen ventilation; whether opening windows helps depends on outdoor air quality.
2. Don't Let Your Fitness Goals Turn You Into a Bigger Vacuum Cleaner

I love outdoor running! Some of you might know we started Women Rise & Run, a community where women come together to move, connect and enjoy the outdoors.
But during this period of haze, we've decided to pause our October run club. A little sad, honestly, because I always look forward to seeing everyone!
When we exercise harder, we breathe faster and take in more air. If that air is polluted, we can also inhale more harmful particles.
When air quality is unhealthy, adjust your exercise plans. Try yoga, stretching, indoor workouts or even dancing in your living room. Check Malaysia's official Air Pollutant Index (API) before heading outside.
Sometimes, taking care of our health means knowing when NOT to push ourselves.
3. Eat the Rainbow, Not the Hype
Can lemon water, green juice or some magical superfood detox your lungs after breathing in haze? Unfortunately, no.
There is no convincing evidence that a particular food or drink can remove fine particulate pollution, including PM2.5, from our lungs.
But nutrition still matters! Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein helps support our overall health. Colourful plant foods provide vitamins and other beneficial compounds.
My little challenge for you: add one extra colour to your next meal. Think dragon fruit, papaya, carrots, leafy greens or juicy tomatoes. Add oats or quinoa for a satisfying meal.
They won't magically detox your lungs. Reducing exposure to polluted air is still more important than any special haze-season diet.
Frequently Asked Questions About Haze in Malaysia
Is it safe to exercise outdoors during haze?
It depends on current air quality and your health. When pollution is unhealthy, reduce or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise. Check official API readings.
Can cooking make indoor air pollution worse?
Yes. Frying, grilling and high-temperature cooking can release fine particles indoors. Effective kitchen ventilation and lower-emission methods can help.
Can juice or antioxidants detox your lungs?
No food or drink has been proven to remove PM2.5 from the lungs. Balanced eating supports general health but cannot replace reducing exposure.
What can I eat during haze season?
Try balanced meals with vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein, such as oatmeal with fruit or quinoa bowls.
Where can I check the haze level in Malaysia?
Check Malaysia's official Air Pollutant Index through the Department of Environment's MyEQMS / APIMS service.
One Last Little Reminder From MeâŚ
We can't control the haze, but we can control some of the little choices we make every day.
Healthy living isn't always about doing more. Sometimes, it's about knowing what NOT to do.
Stay safe, eat well, and please don't become a human vacuum cleaner like me! đ
With love,
